Homeschooling 101: How Much Does Homeschooling Cost?

One of the most common questions when someone is considering homeschooling is the cost – and for good reason. Many families are currently paying high tuition fees at private school and can no longer afford it, and they are looking into other alternatives. Homeschooling is an excellent alternative to high-cost private school because 1) it doesn’t cost nearly as much, and 2) you can still get a high quality education.

The answer to the question of how much homeschooling costs isn’t a simple or straight-forward answer, though. You could homeschool completely free of cost, and many families do. In fact, there are more and more high quality free options being offered online everyday. We use a few different free sources in my family currently.

You could also spend hundreds to thousands of dollars homeschooling. It basically comes down to how much you are willing to spend. If you don’t have anything at all to spend, there are several very reputable, free sources you can use. I wrote a post about those options here.

If you want to spend a few hundred dollars you can buy some books or curriculum packages (my favorite resource is Christian Book Distributors), use the library for free books, pay for an online course or a local resource offering courses….. Honestly, there are really just too many options to list in one blog post!

If you’re looking for all-in-one, online options, or other similar programs, I also wrote a post that lists the 10 most popular programs here.

I hope this helps and encourages you! Homeschooling doesn’t have to be expensive or stressful. If you find you are getting stressed over the costs then pull back and see what you can supplement with free options, or do it all free. Above all, have fun!
